These French Onion Soup Bites deliver all the rich, cozy flavor of classic French onion soup in a warm, cheesy, bite-sized appetizer. Perfect for holidays, parties, and easy entertaining.
Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions and cook 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft. Add garlic, salt, pepper, thyme, and balsamic; cook 2–3 minutes more.
Prepare the base:
If using puff pastry: cut into 1.5-inch squares and place in a mini muffin pan.
If using baguette: lightly toast slices.
If using phyllo cups: place on a baking sheet.
Assemble:
Spoon a small amount of caramelized onions into each base. Top with shredded Gruyère.
Bake:
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 12–15 minutes, or until cheese is melted and edges are golden.
Garnish & serve:
Remove from oven, top with thyme or chives, and serve warm.
